Understanding keyword intent helps you create content that matches what your audience is looking for. This guide explains keyword intent and how to use it in your content strategy.

What is Keyword Intent?

Keyword intent is the purpose behind a search query - why someone types specific words into a search engine. For example, someone searching "buy laptop" likely wants to make a purchase, while someone typing "how do laptops work" wants to learn.

Types of Keyword Intent

There are four main types of keyword intent:

  1. Informational Intent Users want to learn something. These searches often start with:
    "How to"

    "What is"

    "Why does"

    Example: "what is content marketing"

  2. Navigational Intent Users want to find a specific website or page. Example: "LinkedIn login" or "Arrow AI dashboard"

  3. Commercial Intent Users research before making a purchase decision. Example: "best content marketing tools" or "marketing automation comparison"

  4. Transactional Intent Users are ready to take action or make a purchase. Example: "buy marketing software" or "content marketing services pricing"

How to Identify Keyword Intent

Look for these signals to identify intent:

  1. Check the search results Enter your keyword in a search engine and analyze the top results. The type of content ranking shows what users want to see.

  2. Look at the wording

"How" and "What" usually signal informational intent

"Best" and "Top" often indicate commercial intent
